There are four main triggers that contribute to acne. Chronic stress is one of the primary causes of adult acne. Balancing personal and professional responsibilities has made the current generation of adults the most time poor crop in history. Operating under a constant and continued level of stress stimulates adrenal glands and kicks them into overdrive, this in turn can boost sebum production which sets the stage for acne development.
As well as the aforementioned stress, there are a number of other main influences relating to the development of acne. Over production of oil, bacteria and inflammation and the accumulation of dead skin cells.
Overactive sebaceous glands. Irrespective of which form of acne is prevalent, one thing is certain, this being that sebum (or oil) production is the catalyst for a series of events that result in breakouts and acne. It is likely that the sufferer will not realize that they are potentially experiencing mild form of acne, and they will attribute this skin condition to excess oiliness.
Any excess sebum is normally associated with follicle congestion, an oily t-zone and enlarged pores.
Cell accumulation and bacteria. Under normal conditions dead cells on the surface of the skin are continually sloughed from the epidermal canal and deposited at the surface of the skin. In cases where acne is present a proliferation of cells occurs at the neck of the follicle, this is accompanied by an excess of sebum that causes the cells to stick together along with any bacteria. This conglomeration of sebum and cells causes the formation of an impaction plug, giving bacteria the perfect anaerobic environment in which to thrive.
Inflammation. In order to keep inflammation under control it is important to consider the application of anti-inflammatory repair agents. These come in the form of botanicals and humectants that help the healing process and soothe inflamed skin. Known anti-inflammatory repair agents are: Green Tea, Panthenol, Camphor, Bisabol, Allantoin, Coneflower, Oat Extract and Licorice Extract.
So what can be done to help treat, clear and prevent adult acne? It is necessary to interrupt the degeneration of the follicle by affecting the four main contributing factors. By inhibiting the activity of overactive sebaceous glands, the food source for bacteria is eliminated. Additionally, (and in order to create a more appealing complexion) ingredients that help to reduce shine are also important.
There is a need to stimulate natural exfoliation superficially, as well as in the follicle lining. Exfoliating will help to remove surface cells that have not been shed, it is also necessary to eliminate the impaction of follicles that trigger the early stages of comedone formation.
Ingredients with known antibacterial agents can help to control bacteria out on the surface of the skin and in the follicle. Additionally, by controlling lipase activity we can regulate the source of fatty acids that contribute to irritation.
